Do men have a reluctance to learning how to cook?
Mr. V: I wouldn’t say men are reluctant to learning to cook. Many men I know know how to cook. I’d say men are more used to women being the primary caregivers in all aspects of their lives, food preparation included. Many men were never asked at a young age if they’re interested in learning how to cook, so they never pick up that skill. Also, humans are naturally lazy, and men aren’t immune to this. Many would rather buy fast food or have anybody other than themselves make their meals. On a personal level, my wife and I vary who cooks dinner, based upon a variety of factors.
Mr. W: Not at all. I cook. I love to learn.
Mr. X: I was brought up never cooking anything and never learned my way around a kitchen. It has been a difficult process to force myself into the world of cooking once I began living on my own. I have had fun learning how to cook and planning meals, but usually that happens when I’ve been unemployed. Then I have the time to prepare, organize, and execute. But I feel like I am not smart enough to cook quickly on the go. Once I start long terms jobs I find it very easy to fall back into the habit of not cooking, because no one in the household wants to wait for me to prepare and organize a meal because I’m so slow.
Mr. Y: I personally don’t, but I know I’m not very good at it, either. I will say that I’d rather participate in the eating part of the meal process, rather than the whole thing. Dishes? Me? All for it. But prep, cooking and dishes? Man, that’s a lot of work. I will say the handful of times that I have, successfully, cooked a meal the experience has been rewarding. That doesn’t mean I’m going to run out and get fantastic at it. I’m also the guy that burned Mac & Cheese noodles in college.
Mr. Z: I love experimenting with different flavors when it comes to established recipes. The only reluctance I have towards cooking is knowing the ladies in my house don’t like it when I stray from the recipe, so I tend to adopt the attitude of “If I can’t cook my way once in a while, by all means continue making this delicious food on your own terms.
